We admit is often easiest to Fair Trade Your Friends during a popular gift giving season like spring (Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Graduation, Teacher Gifts) or during the holiday season when you know they will be spending money on gifts. However, we also encourage you to host events at off-times because the real change we would want to see in everyone’s spending is everyday purchasing on items we consume, not simply gift giving one or two times a year.
Depending on who you are inviting and how far along they are in understanding Fair Trade, you have a variety of options for your event. Coordinate with Rachel on when your event is scheduled so we can be sure to send you your “mini live catalog”, order forms, and other support materials in time for the event.
Event Ideas
1. Highlight an issue your friends care about (global poverty, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking) and show a related documentary followed by a discussion. Offer Fair Trade as one solution to make a difference in breaking cycles of poverty and abuse.
2. Start a short-term Book Club and spend several weeks together learning about issues around the world and explore ways each individual can make steps towards making a difference. Highlight Fair Trade purchasing as an immediate next step, perhaps ending the Book Club with the Fair Trade Your Friends event.
3. Collaborate within your faith community, a neighborhood or school group to host an event at a regularly scheduled meeting. Feature a mini live catalog, have guests complete order forms and let us do the rest!
