The church is the custodian of the meaning of Christmas. It must lead in showing how it should be celebrated. We don’t have all the answers (see our good friends at the Advent Conspiracy who are full of great ideas), but we believe that the global poor must be invited to our feasts and made part of our stories.
To that end, we’ve created a special program for churches called Just One that makes it super easy for your church to engage and that costs you nothing. By simply showing a two minute video(below) and handing out Just One cards, you can teach your people about how our spending can become an instrument of the kingdom that Jesus came into our world to inaugurate. The startling and empowering fact behind Just One is this: Just One Fair Trade purchase from every churchgoer in America would lift one million families out of poverty for one whole year.
Churches all over the country will be teaching their congregations about reframing our spending as a discipleship issue, and using our Christmas spending to bring restoration to the developing world.
There’s no cost to you or rigid program to follow; the way you celebrate Just One is up to you. We’ve got a video for you to show, and Just One cards for you to hand out, but other than that, the idea is yours to run with. Some churches will do a month-long series on justice, others will show the video and spend 5 minutes explaining Fair Trade and the Just One idea.
This idea can work in a church with 15,000 people, or in a living room with 5 people. It’s simply a group of people learning about an idea and deciding to do Christmas differently.
