These items are handmade by the Women's Multipurpose Cooperative in Baguio City, Philippines. This innovative process turns old newspapers into new and beautiful products. The artisans start by wrapping strips of paper around a single bristle from a broom. After wrapping the paper, it is coiled into spiraled square building blocks and secured with starch. Then the building blocks are joined together with thread and glue to make the final product. Starch is used to harden the paper and add shine. This work creates fair wages and enables women to work at workshops close to home.
